Big Learning

This week’s Big Learning in Primary 2/3!

In Numeracy we will be completing our work on Place Value by looking at rounding numbers to the nearest 10/100 and ordinal numbers, before beginning work on addition strategies.

We will be moving on to look at 3D Shape in Maths; identifying a variety of different shapes and being able to talk about their properties using the correct vocabulary – faces, edges and vertices.

In Literacy we will also be looking at adding more description and detail to our writing with the use of interesting adjectives. We are focusing on consistently using capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in every sentence.

The class came up with some amazing ideas and questions when planning ‘What we want to find out…’ about ‘Water’. We are going to begin by looking at the changing states of waterevaporation and condensation.

Homework

Spelling

On a Monday new word lists will go home in blue jotters. The words will include sounds we have worked on in class the previous week. I have attached a list of possible spelling activities that you may wish to try at home this term or your child may want to create their own spelling activity. Any written work can be completed in the blue jotters.

Reading

Reading books will continue to come home weekly to be shared and discussed.

Maths

Some fantastic games can be found on http://www.topmarks.co.uk to help support our learning on Numeral Identification, Number Sequences and Ordering.

Big Learning

Time to look ahead to next week’s Big Learning in Primary 2/3!

In Numeracy we will continue to look at Numeral Identification, Number Sequences and Ordering; writing numbers in words, recalling the number before, after and between given numbers in the range 0-1000 or beyond, putting given numbers into ascending and descending order and partitioning numbers into hundreds, tens and ones.

We have also made a start on our Maths topic by looking at 2D shape; identifying a variety of different shapes and their properties. Children could look for shapes in the environment as they are out and about.

In Literacy we will continue to work on our Common Words and have started revision of the sounds/spelling for sh/ch/th and aw/oi. The word lists will be going home on Monday and some activity suggestions will be put up on the blog. We will also be identifying and discussing the key characters in our reading books. Our topic for Big Writing this week will be a personal piece on ‘My Favourite Person’ – it would be lovely if the children could bring in a photo or picture of the person they are going to write about to include in their writing jotter.

We are ready to start our Science led topic on ‘Water’ this week and the class will play an active role in planning what we are going to learn and how we are going to achieve this.

We will be reviewing our greetings in French, and practising counting to 10 and beyond.

More throwing and catching in PE; thinking about aim, height and direction when using underarm throws. We hope to be outside on a Tuesday as long as the weather lasts; it might be a good idea if the children bring in a pair of leggings or tracksuit bottoms to wear on cooler days.

Big Learning

I hope you have managed to locate our termly Learning Overview on the appropriate page of our blog. It will give you a good idea of the Big Learning experiences we have planned for the term ahead.

Time to look ahead to next week’s Big Learning in Primary 2/3!

In Numeracy we are looking at Number Sequences and Ordering; reciting number sequences forwards and backwards in 1s, 10s and 100s  up to 100 or 1000, skip counting forwards and back in multiples of 2, 5 to 100 and recalling the number before and after a given number in the range 0-100 or 0-1000 for some. This is something which children can readily practise orally at home. We will also be looking at Numeral Identification; naming and representing numbers to at least 1,000 using numerals.

In Literacy we will continue to work on our Common Words; reviewing any errors from our initial assessments and setting targets for moving forwards. We will be focusing on reading aloud with fluency and expression – identifying the spoken words within speech marks. We have set individual targets for writing and your child should be able to share these with you at home; most children need to work on consistently marking sentences with a capital letter and full stop. We are also tightening up on letter formation before looking at beginning to join our handwriting.

We have started to think about having a ‘Growth Mindset’ – having an ‘I can’t do it YET‘ attitude rather than ‘I can’t’. By the end of next week your child should be able to tell you what the ‘Learning Pit‘ is, and some ways to get out of it.

First Week

We have had a busy start to the term. We are all settling into class routines and getting to know each other. We have used our imaginations to create lovely art work and designed some amazing labels for our classroom. We have started to have a look at reading books and written fabulous postcards about our holidays! Everyone worked really hard to complete the morning challenges. Well done! I hope everyone has a great weekend 😊 (photos to follow)
